Common SABAs include: - Albuterol - Levalbuterol[1][9] ## Clinical Use **For Asthma:** - SABAs are used for immediate symptom relief - LABAs should never be used alone for asthma treatment due to safety concerns - LABAs must be combined with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) for asthma management[3][6][7] **For COPD:** - Both LABAs and SABAs help manage symptoms by relaxing airway muscles - LABAs can be used as maintenance therapy - SABAs provide rescue relief for breakthrough symptoms[4] ## Combination Therapy Approaches Several approaches exist for combining these medications: 1. **Separate inhalers**: Using a LABA-containing maintenance inhaler daily and a SABA rescue inhaler as needed 2. **Combination inhalers**: Some products combine a LABA with an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) for maintenance therapy, while a separate SABA is used for rescue 3. **MART/AIR therapy**: A specific approach using a combination inhaler containing both an ICS and formoterol (a fast-acting LABA) that can serve as both maintenance and rescue therapy[5][6] ## Safety Considerations LABAs have been associated with increased risk of severe asthma attacks when used without an inhaled corticosteroid. For this reason, the FDA has recommended that LABAs be used only in conjunction with inhaled steroids for asthma treatment[2][3][7]. Common side effects of beta-agonists include: - Nervous or shaky feeling - Increased heart rate or palpitations - Upset stomach - Sleep disturbances - Muscle aches or cramps[3] The combination of LABAs and SABAs represents an important approach in respiratory medicine, providing both immediate symptom relief and long-term control when used appropriately within comprehensive treatment plans.
