Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Longan extract is a botanical substance derived from the fruit of the Dimocarpus longan tree. It is rich in bioactive compounds including phenolic acids, flavonoids (such as proanthocyanidin A2), and tannins (such as acetonylgeraniin A). Research, particularly on the proprietary formulation known as P80, has demonstrated significant antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza by protecting human airway epithelia and down-modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines like IP10 and MCP1. Beyond its respiratory protective effects, the extract has been investigated for its metabolic benefits, where it appears to regulate hypothalamic POMC and AgRP neuronal activity to suppress food intake and improve glucose homeostasis. It also exhibits xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity, suggesting potential for treating hyperuricemia, and sleep-promoting effects mediated through GABAergic signaling pathways.
