Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lonicera caerulea extract is a botanical extract derived from the fruit of the Lonicera caerulea plant, commonly known as honeyberry, blue honeysuckle, or haskap. The extract is rich in polyphenols, anthocyanins (notably cyanidin-3-glucoside), flavonoids, iridoids, vitamin C, and other antioxidants. Its primary mechanisms include anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, modulating gene and protein expression related to oxidative stress and inflammation (e.g., downregulation of proinflammatory genes like RELA and PTGS2; upregulation of antioxidants like CAT, HMOX1, SOD2). Lonicera caerulea extract has been studied for potential applications in functional foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetics, targeting inflammatory diseases, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, exercise fatigue, and oxidative stress. In vitro studies also suggest antiviral potential via inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein binding. While widely recognized as a health-promoting food, it is not an approved pharmaceutical drug.
