Overview
Loprazolam is a short-acting imidazobenzodiazepine used primarily for the short-term treatment of insomnia, including difficulty falling asleep and frequent nocturnal awakenings. It acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the Gamma aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABA-A receptor) complex by binding to the benzodiazepine site on alpha subunit-containing GABA-A receptors, enhancing the inhibitory effect of GABA neurotransmission. This results in sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, amnesic, and muscle relaxant properties. Loprazolam is recommended only for short-term use due to risks such as dependence and withdrawal symptoms. It is not FDA-approved but has been marketed in several countries under various brand names[1][2][7].
