Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Loquat seed extract is derived from the seeds (kernels) of the loquat tree, Eriobotrya japonica. It is used in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia, for a variety of purported health benefits. The main bioactive compounds found in loquat seeds include phenolic acids (such as chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid), triterpenes (like oleanolic and ursolic acids), flavonoids, and amygdalin. Preclinical studies suggest that loquat seed extracts may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic (lipid-lowering), anti-obesity, antidiabetic, and anticancer properties[2][3][4][7]. Mechanistically, these effects are attributed to modulation of metabolic pathways involved in lipid metabolism and glucose regulation as well as inhibition of inflammatory mediators[4][7]. However, most evidence comes from animal or cell studies; robust clinical data in humans are lacking. Loquat seeds contain significant amounts of amygdalin—a cyanogenic glycoside—which can be toxic at high doses[5]. There are no approved pharmaceutical indications for loquat seed extract; it is primarily marketed as a dietary supplement or functional food ingredient.
