Lorajmine is a monochloroacetyl derivative of ajmaline, an alkaloid derived from the plant *Rauwolfia serpentina*. It functions as a potent Class Ia antiarrhythmic agent, primarily by blocking sodium channels in myocardial cells. The drug is rapidly hydrolyzed in the body to its active metabolite, ajmaline, which also contributes to its electrophysiological effects.
