Overview

Lorazepam is a short-acting benzodiazepine medication primarily used to treat anxiety disorders, insomnia (especially when related to anxiety or situational stress), status epilepticus (continuous seizures), severe agitation, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. It is also used as a pre-anesthetic agent and for sedation in mechanically ventilated patients. Lorazepam acts by enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor in the central nervous system, resulting in sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and amnesic effects. The drug was developed by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and first introduced under the brand names Ativan and Temesta in 1977. Lorazepam is available as oral tablets/capsules (including extended-release forms), oral concentrate/solution, intravenous injection formulations, and topical/transdermal preparations[1][2][3][4][5][6].
