Overview

Lorcaserin is a small molecule serotonin 2C receptor agonist developed for chronic weight management in adults who are obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) or overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m²) with at least one weight-related comorbidity such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, or type 2 diabetes. Lorcaserin acts centrally to promote satiety and reduce food intake by selectively activating the serotonin 2C receptor in the brain. It was first approved by the FDA in June 2012 under the brand name Belviq and later as an extended-release formulation (Belviq XR). In February 2020, it was withdrawn from the U.S. market due to an increased risk of cancer observed in long-term clinical trials[1][2][3][5][7][8].
