Overview

Losartan and eprosartan are both angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1) antagonists, also known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). They work by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to AT1 receptors, reducing blood pressure by preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone release. While they share the same primary mechanism of action, they have some pharmacological differences. Losartan has uricosuric properties, specifically inhibiting urate transporter 1 (SLC22A12, URAT1), which can increase uric acid excretion. Studies comparing these two medications have shown they produce similar blood pressure reductions in patients with hypertension and metabolic syndrome, and both have a neutral effect on fasting and post-fructose load serum uric acid concentration.
