Drug intelligence / Profile preview
KPI-121 is a nanoparticle formulation of loteprednol etabonate, a corticosteroid, utilizing Kala Pharmaceuticals' proprietary Mucus-Penetrating Particle (MPP) technology. This technology is designed to enhance the penetration of the active ingredient through the mucus layer of the tear film, allowing for improved delivery to the ocular surface and underlying tissues. Loteprednol etabonate is a "soft" steroid, engineered to be rapidly metabolized into inactive metabolites, which reduces the risk of corticosteroid-induced side effects such as increased intraocular pressure. KPI-121 was developed in two concentrations: a 1.0% suspension (Inveltys) for the treatment of inflammation and pain following ocular surgery, and a 0.25% suspension (Eysuvis) for the short-term treatment of the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease.
