It is indicated for emergency contraception within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure. The primary mechanism of action involves preventing or delaying ovulation by suppressing the mid-cycle surge of luteinizing hormone (LH). Additionally, it may inhibit fertilization by inducing changes in the cervical mucus that impede sperm penetration.
