Low anticoagulant bovine heparin (LABH) is a purified fraction of bovine unfractionated heparin (UFH) characterized by significantly reduced anticoagulant activity (~20 IU/mg) compared to standard porcine or bovine UFH. Developed by researchers at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, LABH is being investigated for its antimetastatic properties. Its primary mechanism involves disrupting the interaction between circulating tumor cells and platelets by inhibiting P-selectin binding. By blocking these interactions, LABH aims to prevent the formation of metastatic foci in the bloodstream while minimizing the risk of bleeding side effects typically associated with therapeutic doses of standard heparin.
