Low-cost platelet-rich plasma (LC-PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy being developed by the University of Utah for the treatment of hemarthropathy in patients with bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia. The intervention involves a simplified preparation process where a patient's own blood is collected and centrifuged using standard clinical equipment to concentrate platelets, significantly reducing costs compared to commercial PRP kits. The resulting LC-PRP is administered via ultrasound-guided intra-articular injection into affected joints (e.g., knee, elbow, or ankle). The concentrated platelets release various growth factors and cytokines that aim to reduce joint inflammation and promote the repair of tissues damaged by recurrent intra-articular bleeding, thereby addressing chronic pain and functional loss.
