Overview
Low molecular weight alginate oligosaccharides (LMW-AOS) are short-chain carbohydrate polymers produced through the physical, chemical, or enzymatic degradation of alginate, a natural biopolymer extracted from brown seaweed. These oligosaccharides typically possess molecular weights between 400 and 5000 Da, which grants them high water solubility and low viscosity. LMW-AOS are being investigated by Erasmus MC and Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam for their potential to manage secretory and traveller's diarrhea and to enhance the enteral delivery of other pharmaceutical agents. They are characterized as non-toxic, biodegradable, and non-immunogenic research-stage agents.
