Overview

Low-molecular-weight chondroitin sulfate (LMWCS) is a research-stage glycosaminoglycan derivative with a molecular weight typically ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 daltons. It is produced through the oxidative degradation of standard chondroitin sulfate, often sourced from animal tissues such as shark cartilage. LMWCS is primarily investigated for its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties in neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, as well as for its potential in treating osteoarthritis. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that LMWCS can ameliorate pathological changes by reducing neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and amyloid-beta toxicity. Its mechanism involves inhibiting platelet activation and binding to specific targets such as the fibrinogen beta chain (FGB) to suppress inflammatory responses in the central nervous system.
