Low-molecular-weight fucoidan (LMWF) is a sulfated polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed, characterized by a lower molecular weight than natural fucoidan, which enhances its bioavailability and biological activity. It exhibits multiple biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-thrombotic properties. In the context of diabetic cardiovascular complications, LMWF has been shown to protect vasoendothelial function by preserving endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity, specifically by promoting eNOS phosphorylation at Ser1177 and increasing nitric oxide (NO) production. This mechanism helps ameliorate hypertension and endothelial dysfunction in type 2 diabetes models. It is also being investigated as an adjuvant in oncology to improve the efficacy of chemotherapy and mitigate its side effects.
