Low molecular weight fucosan sulfate (LMWFS) is a depolymerized sulfated polysaccharide derived from brown algae, currently under clinical investigation as an adjunctive therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus and prediabetes. Developed by the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, LMWFS is designed to regulate blood glucose levels through multiple mechanisms, including the inhibition of alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase to delay carbohydrate digestion, and the inhibition of protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) to enhance insulin sensitivity. Early-stage clinical trials (Phase 0) in China are evaluating its safety and efficacy in reducing postprandial hyperglycemia and improving overall glycemic control when used alongside standard treatments.
