Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Low-potassium dextran (LPD) solution is an extracellular-type, electrolyte-based organ preservation solution primarily used for flushing, cold static storage, and transportation of donor lungs prior to lung transplantation. The solution contains dextran 40 (a polysaccharide colloid that prevents cell swelling and protects the microvasculature against ischemia-reperfusion injury) and glucose, along with a buffered low-potassium electrolyte formulation. By maintaining a low potassium concentration, the solution prevents potassium-induced pulmonary vasospasm, ensuring even distribution of the flush. The most widely recognized commercial formulation is Perfadex (and its ready-to-use successor Perfadex Plus), originally developed in Sweden and currently marketed by XVIVO Perfusion.
