Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Low Volume iso-osmolar non-ionic radio contrast medium refers to a low-volume (specifically 30 cc) administration of the iso-osmolar, non-ionic dimeric iodinated contrast agent iodixanol (marketed as Visipaque). Developed to minimize the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in high-risk patients, particularly those with stable chronic kidney disease (CKD), this low-dose regimen is utilized during thoracic computed tomography (CT) scanning. Iodixanol is isotonic to blood, which helps reduce vascular fluid shifts and patient discomfort during injection. The safety of this low-volume contrast protocol has been evaluated in clinical trials sponsored by the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System for patients undergoing diagnostic imaging for conditions such as pulmonary embolism, renal artery stenosis, pulmonary cancer, and acute aortic syndrome.
