Overview

Lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), also known as wild blueberry, is a polyphenol-rich fruit native to North America. It is widely recognized for its high concentration of anthocyanins, which contribute to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In preclinical research, lowbush blueberry extracts have demonstrated neuroprotective effects in models of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by downregulating pro-inflammatory markers such as iNOS and TNF-alpha and upregulating protective microRNAs (miR-146a and miR-21). Additionally, it is investigated as a functional feed additive in veterinary medicine, specifically in poultry, to modulate the cecal microbiome and resistome, potentially serving as an alternative to traditional antibiotics.
