Loxoprofen sodium is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) belonging to the propionic acid derivative group, which also includes ibuprofen and naproxen. It functions as a non-selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing the biosynthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain, fever, and inflammation. Loxoprofen is administered as a prodrug and is converted into its active trans-alcohol metabolite following absorption. The transdermal patch formulation, marketed under brand names such as Loxonide and Loxonin, is widely used for the topical relief of pain and inflammation associated with chronic conditions like osteoarthritis, as well as acute musculoskeletal pain and traumatic injuries.
