LR-IL-22 is a **genetically engineered probiotic** based on *Limosilactobacillus reuteri* that is modified to locally release the cytokine **interleukin-22 (IL-22)** upon oral administration. The drug is designed as a **radioprotector and radiation mitigator** for the intestines, facilitating the delivery of higher, more therapeutic doses of abdominal or total-body irradiation (e.g., for ovarian cancer) by reducing intestinal toxicity and preserving intestinal stem cell populations. LR-IL-22 acts **locally**, releasing IL-22 at the site where it is most needed, modulating inflammation, facilitating epithelial repair, preserving intestinal barrier integrity, and altering the tumor microenvironment. In mouse models, co-administration with chemotherapy and radiotherapy reduced tumor burden, enhanced overall survival, increased tumor immune infiltration (particularly CD8+ T cells), and upregulated PD-L1 expression on tumor cells[1][3].
