Overview

LSALT peptide is a novel anti-inflammatory drug candidate developed to prevent and treat inflammation-induced organ injury, particularly acute kidney injury (AKI), as well as inflammation in the lungs and liver. It acts as a non-enzymatic inhibitor of dipeptidase-1 (DPEP1), which was recently identified as a major leukocyte adhesion receptor on the endothelium of the lung, liver, and kidney. By inhibiting DPEP1, LSALT peptide blocks neutrophil and monocyte/macrophage recruitment to sites of inflammation, thereby reducing tissue damage caused by excessive immune cell infiltration. Unlike conventional anti-inflammatory drugs that target individual cytokines, LSALT peptide targets this novel adhesion receptor pathway. The drug is being developed by Arch Biopartners and has undergone Phase 2 clinical trials for moderate-to-severe COVID-19 (to attenuate pulmonary and renal inflammation) and for cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CS-AKI). Clinical studies have demonstrated that LSALT peptide is safe and well-tolerated in humans[1][2][5][6][7][8].
