Overview

LSC2 is an investigational allogeneic cell therapy consisting of ABCB5-positive limbal stem cells (LSCs) developed for the treatment of Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD). The product is derived from the corneal rims of cadaveric donors, where the stem cells are isolated using the ATP-binding cassette member B5 (ABCB5) marker, expanded ex vivo, and stored in a donor cell bank. ABCB5 is a key regulator of limbal stem cell maintenance and corneal development; its presence identifies a subpopulation of cells capable of regenerating the corneal epithelium. LSC2 is administered topically to the eye following the surgical removal of the conjunctival pannus. By replenishing the depleted stem cell niche in the limbus, the therapy aims to restore the corneal surface, inhibit neovascularization, and improve visual acuity in patients whose endogenous stem cells have been lost due to chemical burns, thermal injuries, or disease.
