Overview

LSI-518P is an orally bioavailable prodrug of edaravone, a potent free radical scavenger and neuroprotective agent. Developed by Life Science Institute (LSI), a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group, LSI-518P was designed to improve the convenience of edaravone administration for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), who previously required intravenous infusions. The drug functions by being converted into edaravone, which then scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite, thereby mitigating oxidative stress-mediated neuronal death. Although it reached Phase 1 clinical trials, development was ultimately discontinued as the developer prioritized MT-1186, an oral suspension formulation of the parent drug edaravone (Radicava ORS).
