Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lubicosa is a finished pharmaceutical formulation of lubiprostone, a bicyclic fatty acid derivative used to treat various forms of constipation. Manufactured by Salud Care, Lubicosa acts as a selective activator of ClC-2 chloride channels located on the apical membrane of the intestinal epithelium. By stimulating the secretion of chloride-rich fluid into the intestinal lumen, it increases intestinal motility and softens stool, thereby facilitating bowel movements. It is indicated for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC), opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non-cancer pain, and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in women. As a locally acting agent, it has low systemic absorption, which minimizes systemic side effects.
