LUC-101 is a synthetic lipid therapeutic being developed by Lucina Biotherapeutics for the treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Stargardt Type 3 macular dystrophy. It is a proprietary intravitreal formulation of C24:5n-3, a very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (VLC-PUFA). The drug is part of the PUFActive platform, which aims to replenish critical lipids that naturally decline in retinal tissues with age and disease. By restoring VLC-PUFA concentrations, LUC-101 is designed to rejuvenate retinal cells and reverse aging-related dysfunction, potentially acting as a disease-modifying therapy. Research has demonstrated that targeted replenishment of these essential membrane lipids can restore retinal structure and function in animal models. LUC-101 is currently in IND-enabling studies.
