Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lufenuron is a benzoylurea insecticide and insect growth regulator (IGR) primarily used in veterinary medicine for the control of flea infestations in animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and ferrets. It functions by inhibiting chitin synthesis, a critical process for the formation of the insect exoskeleton. This mechanism prevents the proper development and hatching of insect larvae and eggs, effectively interrupting the flea life cycle without directly killing adult fleas. Beyond its veterinary applications, Lufenuron is also utilized as an agricultural pesticide against various insects, including lepidopterans, eriophyid mites, and western flower thrips. Additionally, it has been explored for its antifungal properties, as fungal cell walls also contain chitin.
