Overview

Luffa operculata is a plant species in the Cucurbitaceae family commonly known as ball luffa or sponge cucumber. It is used in traditional and homeopathic medicine primarily for treating and preventing colds, nasal swelling, sinus problems (such as rhinosinusitis), and seasonal allergies. Some preparations are marketed for arthritis pain and other conditions. The mechanism of action is not fully established; however, animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory activity via inhibition of edema formation. Extracts have shown antimicrobial effects against certain bacterial pathogens in vitro and antioxidant properties have also been reported. Luffa operculata is most commonly available as a homeopathic remedy (diluted extracts) for cold and sinus congestion relief[1][2][3][4][5]. There are no robust clinical data supporting its efficacy for any indication.
