Lumefantrine is an antimalarial drug used exclusively in combination with artemether for the treatment of acute uncomplicated malaria caused by *Plasmodium falciparum* and other *Plasmodium* species, including those acquired in chloroquine-resistant areas. It acts as a blood schizonticide, targeting the erythrocytic stages of the parasite. The exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, but lumefantrine is believed to inhibit β-hematin formation by forming complexes with hemin and to inhibit nucleic acid and protein synthesis within the parasite. Lumefantrine has a longer half-life than artemether, helping to clear residual parasites after rapid initial reduction by artemether. It is not used for malaria prevention or for severe/complicated malaria. Developed and manufactured by Novartis.
