Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lumixa (marketed as Aquoral Lipo in Spain) is a multi-component topical ophthalmic solution developed for the management of dry eye disease (DED) and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The formulation contains 0.15% crosslinked hyaluronic acid sodium salt, which provides superior lubrication and longer residence time on the ocular surface compared to standard linear hyaluronic acid. It incorporates liposomes to stabilize and replenish the lipid layer of the tear film, thereby reducing evaporative water loss. Additionally, the solution contains crocin, a carotenoid derived from saffron that provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and EDTA disodium salt. Clinical studies conducted by researchers at the University of Seville have demonstrated that Lumixa effectively improves tear film stability (measured by tear break-up time) and alleviates symptoms in patients with moderate MGD.
