Lunac Therapeutics is developing an intravenous small molecule anticoagulant program that targets activated Factor XII (FXIIa) for the prevention and treatment of thrombosis. Founded as a spin-out from the University of Leeds by Professor Helen Philippou and Dr. Richard Foster, the company focuses on inhibiting FXIIa because this clotting factor enzyme plays a critical role in pathological occlusive clot formation but is not essential for normal hemostasis. This selective mechanism of action aims to provide effective anticoagulation without the increased bleeding risk associated with traditional anticoagulants like heparin or warfarin. The intravenous program is currently in preclinical development and is intended for acute clinical settings where rapid anticoagulation is required, alongside the company's oral small molecule program.
