Lunasin-enriched soy extract is a dietary supplement derived from soybeans and specifically enriched for the bioactive peptide lunasin. Lunasin is a 43–44 amino acid peptide with an intramolecular disulfide bond, naturally present in soy and some other grains. The extract contains significantly higher concentrations of lunasin compared to standard soy protein isolates[4][9]. Mechanistically, lunasin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic (cholesterol-lowering), and anticancer properties. It acts epigenetically by binding to histone H3 and inhibiting its acetylation by PCAF histone acetylase enzyme; this downregulates HMG-CoA reductase expression (the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis) and upregulates LDL receptor expression in liver cells[4]. Lunasin also reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1β and interleukin-8[1][5][9]. In cancer models, it inhibits cell proliferation via disruption of mitotic spindle formation and modulates integrin-mediated cell adhesion pathways[7][8]. The product is typically administered orally as capsules or powders but can be formulated into various oral dosage forms[3].
