Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Luprodex is a sustained-release depot formulation of leuprolide acetate developed by Bharat Serums & Vaccines. It functions as a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist that targets the GnRH receptor in the pituitary gland. Upon initial administration, it causes a transient increase in the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH); however, continuous exposure leads to the downregulation and desensitization of these receptors. This results in a profound reduction in LH and FSH secretion, which in turn suppresses the production of testosterone in males and estrogen in females to castrate or postmenopausal levels. The drug utilizes a biodegradable polymer-based novel drug delivery system (NDDS) to provide controlled release over 1, 3, or 6 months, and is primarily indicated for the treatment of hormone-sensitive conditions such as advanced prostate cancer and endometriosis.
