Overview

Lutein is a naturally occurring xanthophyll carotenoid synthesized by plants and found in high concentrations in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. In humans, it accumulates in the retina (macula) and lens of the eye. Lutein acts as an antioxidant and light filter—scavenging reactive oxygen species to protect ocular tissues from oxidative damage and filtering blue light to reduce photoreceptor injury. It is commonly used as a dietary supplement for eye health, particularly for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Lutein has also been investigated for cardiovascular protection and cancer prevention but with limited evidence[1][2][5][6].
