Lutein ester is a dietary supplement and food additive form of the carotenoid lutein, in which one or two fatty acids are chemically bound to the hydroxyl groups of the parent molecule. Lutein itself is a xanthophyll carotenoid found naturally in green leafy vegetables and other plant sources. In plants, lutein typically exists as an esterified form (lutein ester), which must be hydrolyzed (saponified) to yield free lutein for absorption in humans[3][5]. Lutein esters are used primarily for their antioxidant properties and their role in supporting eye health by acting as macular pigments that filter blue light and protect retinal tissues from oxidative damage[5]. Studies suggest that the bioavailability of lutein from esters may be higher than from free lutein, with some reports indicating up to 62% increased absorption[5]. Lutein esters are widely used as dietary supplements (powders, crystals, oil suspensions) and food additives in products such as bakery goods, dairy products, baby formula, beverages, and more[5].
