Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. It plays a central role in regulating the reproductive system in both males and females. In women, LH triggers ovulation and stimulates the production of steroid hormones from the ovaries; in men, it stimulates Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone[6][1]. As a medication or therapeutic agent, recombinant human luteinizing hormone (lutropin alfa) is used primarily to treat female infertility due to hypothalamic or pituitary insufficiency or profound LH deficiency[1]. It acts as an agonist at the lutropin-choriogonadotropic hormone receptor (LH/CG receptor), mimicking endogenous LH activity and promoting follicular development and ovulation[1]. Commercially available forms include recombinant products like lutropin alfa as well as urinary-derived mixtures with FSH known as menotropins[2][3][4][5].
