Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lutetium-177 microspheres (177Lu-microspheres) are a radiopharmaceutical formulation consisting of microspheres labeled with the beta- and gamma-emitting radioisotope lutetium-177. Developed primarily by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, these microspheres are designed for localized radionuclide therapy, such as selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) or intra-operative radiopharmaceutical therapy (IORPT). The formulation delivers high-dose localized beta radiation to tumor tissues, inducing DNA double-strand breaks and cell death, while the low-energy gamma emissions allow for real-time SPECT/CT imaging and dosimetry. Lutetium-177 microspheres are being investigated for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and as permanent implants for loco-regional breast cancer therapy.
