Overview

Lutropin alfa is a recombinant form of human luteinizing hormone (LH), produced using genetically modified Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells. It is used primarily to treat female infertility due to hypothalamic or pituitary insufficiency, specifically in women with profound LH deficiency who do not have primary ovarian failure. Lutropin alfa mimics the action of endogenous LH by binding to the LH/choriogonadotropic hormone receptor on ovarian theca and granulosa cells, stimulating follicular development and estradiol production when administered with follitropin alfa (FSH). After sufficient follicular maturation, hCG is given to induce ovulation. The drug acts as an agonist at the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor, activating adenylate cyclase and downstream pathways involved in steroidogenesis and follicle maturation[1][4][6]. Lutropin alfa was marketed under the brand name Luveris but has been discontinued in some regions such as the United States[3].
