Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Luventa XL is an extended-release oral formulation of galantamine, a small molecule acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and nicotinic receptor modulator. Developed and marketed by Fontus Health, it is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderately severe dementia of the Alzheimer type. The drug works by increasing the concentration of acetylcholine in the brain through the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and by enhancing the action of acetylcholine on nicotinic receptors. The extended-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing, which is intended to improve patient compliance compared to immediate-release versions. It is currently approved and available in the UK as a prescription-only medicine in strengths of 8mg, 16mg, and 24mg.
