Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LUZ19 is a lytic bacteriophage (specifically a podovirus belonging to the family *Autographivirinae*) that targets *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. It is being investigated as a therapeutic agent (phage therapy) for the treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* infections, including those in patients with cystic fibrosis or burn wounds. LUZ19 is a pili-targeted phage that adsorbs to the host cell and completes its lytic cycle within approximately 25 minutes. It has been evaluated in preclinical models, such as the Hollow Fiber Infection Model (HFIM), both as monotherapy and in combination with other phages (e.g., PYO2, E215) or antibiotics (e.g., aztreonam) to overcome resistance and enhance bactericidal activity.
