Overview

LXD191 is a light-activated topical small molecule therapy being developed by LightOx for the treatment of oral epithelial dysplasia (OED), pre-cancerous oral lesions, and early-stage oral cancer. The treatment involves the topical application of a gel containing the small molecule compound to lesions in the oral cavity. Upon application, the drug is activated by a specific light source, triggering a photochemical reaction that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). This ROS-mediated cytotoxicity induces apoptosis and cell death specifically in the targeted dysplastic or cancerous cells while minimizing collateral damage to adjacent healthy tissue. LXD191 is designed as a non-invasive, chair-side alternative to traditional surgical excision or passive surveillance ('watch and wait'). As of 2024, the drug is in the preclinical development stage, with Phase I/II clinical trials scheduled to commence in late 2025.
