LY-2183240 is a small molecule drug that acts as a potent inhibitor of both the reuptake and breakdown of the endocannabinoid anandamide. Specifically, it inhibits fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), the primary enzyme responsible for degrading anandamide in the brain. This leads to significantly elevated levels of anandamide and has been shown to produce analgesic (pain-relieving) and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects in animal models. However, LY-2183240 has relatively poor selectivity and also inhibits several other enzymes besides FAAH. As a result, it was never developed for clinical use but remains widely used in research settings and has also been sold as a designer drug[1][2][5].
