LY2189102 is a humanized monoclonal antibody (IgG4) that binds to interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) with high affinity and neutralizes its activity. It was developed by Eli Lilly for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, primarily type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and rheumatoid arthritis. The drug acts as an IL-1β inhibitor, aiming to reduce inflammation associated with pancreatic β-cell apoptosis and insulin resistance in T2DM. Clinical studies demonstrated that weekly subcutaneous administration of LY2189102 modestly reduced HbA1c and fasting glucose levels while also lowering inflammatory biomarkers such as hs-CRP and IL-6 in T2DM patients. The drug showed a favorable safety profile but development did not progress beyond phase 2 trials[1][3][5][6][8].
