Overview

Lycium barbarum bark extract is a botanical extract derived from the bark of the Lycium barbarum plant, also known as goji or wolfberry. While most research and clinical use have focused on the berries, extracts from other plant parts including bark are believed to contain similar bioactive compounds, such as polysaccharides, flavonoids, and carotenoids, that exhibit antioxidant, immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and potential neuroprotective and metabolic effects. The extract is indicated primarily as a dietary supplement or functional food, with traditional uses in Chinese medicine for supporting vision, metabolic health, immune regulation, and liver and kidney function. Mechanistically, its effects are attributed to free radical scavenging, modulation of inflammatory signaling, immune activity enhancement, and potential protection against retinal cell apoptosis. Modern human clinical trials have primarily involved berry extracts, but bark extract is presumed to have overlapping pharmacological actions due to similar composition.
