Overview

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) are the primary bioactive components extracted from the fruit of *Lycium barbarum* L., commonly known as goji berry or wolfberry. [1] They are water-soluble glycoconjugates investigated for a wide range of therapeutic effects, including neuroprotection, immunomodulation, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic regulation. [1, 10] In preclinical models of glaucoma, LBP has demonstrated neuroprotective effects on retinal ganglion cells by modulating the endothelin system (down-regulating ET-1 and regulating its ETA and ETB receptors), which may improve retinal blood supply. [19, 4] In gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders, its mechanism involves modulating the gut microbiota by promoting beneficial bacteria and influencing the production of short-chain fatty acids. [7, 15, 18] Clinical trials are investigating LBP for conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cancer-related fatigue, colorectal cancer, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). [5]
