Lycorine hydrochloride thioester is a small molecule derivative of the natural alkaloid lycorine, specifically modified as a thioester hydrochloride salt to enhance its pharmacological profile. Developed by Shandong Dain Marine Biopharmaceutical, it is being investigated as a treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), which is primarily caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16). The compound exerts its antiviral effect by inhibiting viral replication; research suggests it interferes with viral RNA synthesis and protein translation, possibly through the inhibition of the viral 3C protease or RNA-dependent RNA polymerase.
