Overview
Lycorine hydrochloride thiosulfate is a small molecule antiviral agent being developed by Shandong Dain Marine Biopharmaceutical for the treatment of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). It is a salt form of lycorine, a natural alkaloid extracted from plants in the Amaryllidaceae family. The drug demonstrates potent inhibitory activity against enteroviruses, including Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16), which are the primary causative agents of HFMD. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of viral protein synthesis and RNA replication. As of 2024, it is in Phase 1 clinical trials in China to evaluate safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in healthy adults, with the ultimate goal of treating pediatric HFMD.
