Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LymeShield is an oral vaccine developed by US Biologic to prevent the transmission of Lyme disease by targeting the primary wildlife reservoir, specifically white-footed mice (*Peromyscus leucopus*). The vaccine utilizes the OrisBio platform, which employs *Bacillus subtilis* spores to express the Outer Surface Protein A (OspA) of *Borrelia burgdorferi*. When consumed by mice via spray-coated food pellets, the vaccine induces the production of anti-OspA antibodies. These antibodies are then ingested by ticks during a blood meal, where they neutralize the bacteria within the tick's midgut, thereby breaking the transmission cycle to humans. The vaccine received USDA conditional licensure in 2023.
