Overview
Lymfactin is a gene therapy designed to induce the expression of human vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C), a protein that promotes the growth and repair of lymphatic vessels. It is administered as a single perinodal injection, often in conjunction with microvascular lymph node transfer surgery, for the treatment of secondary lymphedema—particularly breast cancer-related upper limb lymphedema. The therapy aims to restore lymphatic function by stimulating new lymphatic vessel formation at sites where the system has been damaged, such as after cancer surgery or radiation. Clinical studies have shown that Lymfactin can reduce excess arm volume and improve quality of life in affected patients, though results from later-phase trials have been inconclusive regarding efficacy[3][4][6][8].
